The greatly anticipated Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid, also called the PHEV, will have the advantage of a number of new hybrids designed to improve efficiency. These include a driver-controlled electric only mode which will allow the driver to preserve the electric portion of power rather htan using it upfront. Another is the ability to use regenerative braking energy to the vehicle's electric-behicle battery rather than the regular hybrid system battery.

Plugin/EV only Mods:
Many enthusiasts do not want to wait until the release of the official plugin. It is possible to mod your existing car in order to achieve a variety of results. These include increasing mileage and running on electric power only (called "EV" mode).
While many hacks can be performed by the average user, you should understand the risks involved in the process before taking on any modifications. Often such undertakings will void your car's warranty. It is also possible to damage your car if hacked incorrectly.
